Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has reaffirmed the state’s commitment to strengthening economic and trade relations with the Republic of Turkey, describing the partnership as one that should be expanded to unlock greater investment opportunities. Receiving Turkish Ambassador, H.E. Mr. Mehmet Poroy, at the Round House, Alausa, Ikeja, Hamzat highlighted Lagos’ position as Nigeria’s commercial and financial hub. He noted that Turkish companies have worked with the state for years on projects like the Onikan Stadium and said it was time to scale up cooperation across more sectors.
Hamzat said Lagos’ economic strength, entrepreneurial drive and large population continue to make it the preferred destination for business. He acknowledged the contributions of Turkish firms, especially in construction and infrastructure, and stressed that the existing relationship provides a solid foundation to expand into other areas. The Deputy Governor assured the Ambassador of the state’s readiness for further discussions to identify mutual interests and deepen bilateral ties, expressing confidence that stronger engagement would boost commerce, infrastructure and overall economic growth.
Ambassador Poroy said the visit followed directives from the Turkish President after the Nigerian President’s trip to Turkey earlier this year, aimed at deepening economic relations. He appealed to Lagos to sustain an enabling environment for foreign investment and to consider Turkish firms for future infrastructure projects. Poroy added that enhanced cooperation would drive sustainable growth, create jobs and facilitate technology transfer. He disclosed that the Turkish delegation would also engage the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry to strengthen business collaborations and identify new investment opportunities.
