The Nigeria Police Force has responded to recent public statements and social media commentary by Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, concerning the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 2, Lagos, and a pending criminal matter. The Force said the case in question has been fully investigated and is now before a court of competent jurisdiction following advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions. Describing the matter as sub judice, the Police stated it will not be tried in the media and urged the public to allow the judiciary to determine the outcome without prejudice.
The Force also confirmed that internal accountability processes have commenced. The AIG, Force Criminal Investigation Department, has invited AIG Moshood Jimoh for questioning over the allegations. In addition, FCID Abuja issued a formal letter of invitation dated 30/07/2026 to Mr. Otse to appear and substantiate the claims made publicly. The Police said investigations into misconduct are handled through established channels including the Force CID, Complaint Response Unit, and Office of the IGP, and apply to all officers irrespective of rank, as well as to all complainants irrespective of public profile.
Reiterating its guiding principles, the Force said discipline is governed by the Constitution, the Police Act 2020, Police Regulations and Force Orders. While upholding the right to freedom of expression and constructive criticism, it warned that the right does not cover defamation or unsubstantiated allegations aimed at forcing outcomes outside due process. The Police urged Mr. Otse and the public to honour the CID invitation and engage in good faith, noting that grievances are best addressed through official complaint mechanisms. It added that any officer found culpable will face sanctions, while false allegations intended to damage reputation will attract legal redress.
