The Ogun State Police Command has reactivated Operation VELVET across all 20 Local Government Areas, following directives from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu. The intelligence-led operation is aimed at enforcing transit regulations, improving highway safety, and ensuring the free flow of traffic across the Gateway State.
The focus will be on traffic offenses that endanger public safety and create vulnerabilities for crime. These include one-way driving, reckless and dangerous driving, unauthorized use of sirens, vehicles with missing or altered registration plates, unlicensed drivers, vehicular overloading, and indiscriminate parking that obstructs traffic. Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, has directed Area Commanders, DPOs and heads of operational units to ensure effective deployment. He stressed that personnel must carry out duties professionally, firmly, and with full respect for citizens’ fundamental rights.
CP Ojajuni warned that Operation VELVET must not be used as an excuse for extortion, illegal detention, harassment, or unauthorized impoundment of vehicles and documents. Supervisory officers will be held responsible for their teams, and any officer caught in bribery, intimidation, or misconduct will face immediate disciplinary action. The Command called on motorists, fleet operators and transit workers to obey traffic laws and cooperate with officers, and urged the public not to offer bribes to evade sanctions. The police reaffirmed their commitment to professionalism and solicited residents’ support to keep Ogun roads safer.
