Order has been restored to Sango-Ota roads following the Ogun State Police Command’s crackdown on traffic gridlock.
For many commuters, the Sango-Ota under-bridge has long been defined by heavy congestion and daily delays. But on Sunday morning, traffic moved more freely, offering some relief to motorists and pedestrians who use the route.
The difference was noticeable from as early as 5 a.m., as vehicles were able to pass through the area with less difficulty.
This improvement followed a directive from the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, under the ongoing “Operation No Traffic Gridlock.” Officers were deployed to key points, traders were moved off the roads and motorists were made to comply with basic traffic rules. The presence of senior officers on ground, including ACP Shola Oladele, Area Commander of Ota, accompanied by the DPO of Sango-Ota Police Division, reflected a level of coordination that is often missing in routine enforcement.
The situation in Sango-Ota is not new. Along the ever busy Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, ongoing construction has reduced what was once a six-lane corridor to just two lanes in some sections.
The recent intervention shows that the problem can be managed when there is consistent enforcement. The police at the Sango Area Command appear to be working intensely to ensure the free flow of traffic and their efforts have made a visible difference.
The Ogun State Police Command also deserves commendation for clearing shanties, relocating street traders and directing motorists in a more orderly manner.
However, enforcement alone will not be enough. It would also help if road contractors expedite the ongoing construction work to reduce the pressure on the narrowed lanes. For lasting results, traffic control efforts must be sustained, while structural issues are addressed at the same time.
Commuters will likely welcome this improvement and with feelers from the Ogun State Police Command, the changes will be maintained over time.
