JOS — The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has commenced a nationwide capacity-building programme for its counselors at the NDLEA Academy, Jos, Plateau State. Organized by the Directorate of Counseling, Treatment and Rehabilitation, DCTR, the training brings together more than 100 counselors from across the Agency’s commands and formations. It is the first Agency-led professional development exercise for counselors in several years.
Speaking at the opening of phase 1, NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), represented by ACGN Bashir Ibrahim, Director of DCTR, said the programme is designed to revitalize staff morale and equip officers with modern tools to address evolving substance use challenges. He described it as a reaffirmation of rehabilitation as a core mandate and an assurance that clients in NDLEA facilities will receive evidence-based care that meets national and international standards.
The training will focus on harmonizing treatment protocols, improving clinical skills for new psychoactive substances and co-occurring mental health issues, and strengthening ethics, confidentiality, and data management. Other goals include peer review, clinical supervision, and reducing inconsistencies in service delivery across state rehabilitation centres. Marwa assured that the Agency will sustain investments in personnel development as part of its broader strategy to tackle both drug supply and demand in Nigeria.
