The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to partner against drug trafficking and copyright piracy. Speaking at the NDLEA headquarters on Friday, July 17, 2026, NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), said the alliance reflects how criminal networks operate across different illegal trades. According to him, syndicates that traffic narcotics often also fund piracy of music, films, books and software, with proceeds from one crime used to finance the other.
The MoU commits both agencies to intelligence sharing, joint operations, capacity building and technical support. A Joint Working Committee will be established to coordinate the collaboration and track results. Marwa described the partnership as one that protects both public health and Nigeria’s creative industry, while NCC Director General, Dr. John Asein, said large-scale piracy is an organized crime that kills jobs, reduces government revenue and discourages investment.
Asein noted that global experience shows the same logistics, financial and distribution channels used for drugs are often used to move pirated goods, with piracy proceeds also laundered into other crimes. He said the NCC will draw on NDLEA’s strength in intelligence-led enforcement, surveillance and financial investigations. Both agencies described the agreement as a step toward dismantling criminal structures that undermine national security, the economy and the rule of law.
